There is widespread belief across global Christianity that we are closing in upon the ‘end-times’. According to which groups one canvasses, the percentage who hold this view varies from about 33% to 89%. The wise vs foolish virgins parable cautions us to be prepared for the Lord’s triumphant return at the close of the age, and we are given some vague clues as to the preceding conditions. But what exactly is this, and when will be ‘the end of the age’? “Not even the angels in heaven know this, but only the Father”.

Despite, or perhaps because of, an abundance of parabolic imagery, the whole subject of ‘end-times’ is a minefield of interpretive speculation (and misinterpretation). We examine some of the interpretive problems and attempt to glean at least a qualitative view of where we stand in terms of end-time indicators.

Dr Gordon Stanger is a geologist, hydrologist, water resources specialist, and a climate-change impact analyst. He is an RFA committee member and is semi-retired.
