“Why is the universe the way it is?” by Dr Hugh Ross

When: 7 pm, Thursday 12th March 2020

Where: Classroom 3 (ground floor), Tabor College, 181 Goodwood Road, Millswood. Carpark entry from Mitchell Street.

Before Copernicus and Galileo, it was widely believed that the earth was the centre of the universe and that the sun, moon, planets and stars rotated around our planet, but much of this is now reversed. The moon still rotates around the earth, but the earth rotates around the sun, the sun is just one star in the Milky Way Galaxy and there are billions of galaxies, etc. It makes earth look very small and insignificant, so why should God care for us? The decreasing insignificance of the earth is called the Copernican principle. However, there has been another change in perspective in recent years. It has been discovered that many of these features of the universe are finely tuned and vital for intelligent life on earth. One scientist expressed it this way, “The more I examine the universe and the details of its architecture, the more evidence I find that the universe in some sense must have known we were coming.” (Freeman Dyson).

On this coming Thursday, Dr Hugh Ross will connect with us via Zoom Video. He will be speaking from California (from 1- 30 am his time) and will talk to us on “Why the universe is the way it is?” He has written a book on this topic and won’t be able to cover it all, but some of the topics he may cover are:

  • Why is the universe so big?
  • Why is it so old?
  • Why is it so dark?
  • Why is it decaying?
  • Why is it not perfect?

Dr Hugh Ross was an astronomer/astrophysicist at the University of Toronto. He is the founder and president of Reasons to Believe, (www.reasons.org), and is the author of over 17 books including ‘The Creator and the Cosmos’, ‘Why The Universe is The Way it is ‘ and ‘Navigating Genesis.’ Ross has addressed students and faculty on over 300 campuses in the US and abroad and speaks at various churches and groups on a wide variety of science-faith topics. He runs a weekly meeting for sceptics and agnostics. He is asked to present to government agencies and atheists and leading contemporaries on the powerful evidence for a purpose filled universe.
