The Apostolic Forebears and Apologists were the fore-runners of Christian theology, but they are so much more than that. As we explore their theology and spirituality today, hopefully they give us a window into how we can face contemporary paradigms more effectively. In particular, some of them sought to be more correlationist – seeing where there were intersections between Christianity and other paradigms; others sought to be more like the “pilgrim” or the “exile” – they fought against the society’s paradigms. This whole game of playing with paradigms could be a very dangerous one to play, and the pitfalls, but also the triumphs of these people in playing this game give us great encouragement, and wisdom to draw upon (if only we did!).

Matt Gray

Matthew James Gray is a Church history and theology lecturer at Tabor College and also writes in Wondering Fair, which is an online apologetics magazine.
