During the Second World War, the response of the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches to Nazism was mixed. Some sections acquiesced and others protested in some way, which was a very dangerous thing to do; as many clergy died. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was an outstanding figure who opposed the rise of Nazism, and he paid the price. So, who was Dietrich Bonhoeffer and what can we learn from his life and legacy?
Well, he was a German Christian pastor, theologian and author; and he lived for just 39 years from 1906 until he was executed by the Nazis in 1945, only 1 month short of Germany’s unconditional surrender in World War II. He was a courageous, thoughtful and inspiring leader. He was a martyr and his writings have been widely influential to this day.
