The Rise of Atheism from Greek and Roman Culture

On March 12th Dr Leonard Long will speak on the impact of Greek and Roman philosophers on the rise of atheism in Western culture. The classical Greek culture is famous for their early scientists and great philosophers. Plato and Aristotle lived 400 years before Christ and had little knowledge of the God of the Old Testament. However, they developed arguments for the existence of God and much of their teachings were influential on the early Church fathers. However, there were other Greek and Roman thinkers, such as Democritus, Epicurus and Lucretius, who had very materialistic views. These thinkers were enormously influential on the rise of atheism within Western culture, especially during the period of The Enlightenment. Leonard will provide a summary of the classical world and show how classical philosophers affected the West even through to modern times.
