Here is Tom’s summary:
Apologetics is as old as the Christian faith in one way, taking its original inspiration from scripture, with direct verses like 1 Peter 3:15 and frequently in the book of Acts, it shows the apostle Paul regularly reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews. Justin Martyr and St Augustine give early examples of reasoning and worshipping God with their (our) minds, in line with both the Shema and of course with the first part of the greatest commandment. Yet, just like Paul who changed his approach (but not his message) with the Athenian philosophers where he spoke Greek and used philosophy and their own writings, there is a need for some updates to our approach in the west in 2025 especially when considering that an increasing number of people in the West are digital natives. Further I would argue there is an urgency here as many young folks are investigating the Christian faith and those of us in the Church need to be ready to welcome them and to challenge them so as to grow and strengthen their faith. To do this we need a new apologetics, one which shows that the Gospel speaks and brings hope to 2025 just as it did in the first century.
