Separation of Church and State is a huge and potentially divisive subject. Central to the idea of separation of church (religion) and state are the ideas of freedom of religion (to practise one’s religion provided it does not interfere with the rights of others); even freedom from religion and freedom to change religion.
This Thursday Rob James will present a short history of Church and State from the days of the Roman Empire to the Declaration of American Independence. Tying the subject down is impossible, so this talk:
- Shows the flow of key events (in chronological order) leading to the current era
- Presents some well-known events and others less well known.
- Factually presents the subject with minimal interpretation
- Draws on some experiences and observations from the presenter’s travels.
- Explores how church and state operated in the context of:
- Church and State in Imperial Roman Times
- Formation and extinction of The Holy Roman Empire
- A short history of England and Ireland from the time of Henry the VIII
- Declaration of American Independence and Amendments to the Constitution
Often the presenter gets more out of a presentation from their research than the hearers. However, it is hoped that the information provided can help the listener and encourage them to perhaps carry out their own research.
Rob James is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and has an honours degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Adelaide (1974). He is a director/part owner in a fledgling consulting engineering company working primarily in the mining industry. From an early age and in high school he was and still is very interested in history; and with his wife Diana, enjoys researching the history of countries they have visited or stayed in.
